One of my 2 cats has started defecating outside the litter box. What could be the problem

I have 2 male nuetered cats, both from same litter. They are 12 1/2 years old. I have 2 litter boxes that I keep extremely clean. Theyare cleaned daily or twice daily. One of my cats has started defecating outside the litter box. Not all the time, just occasionally. I have not had this problem until recently. Any suggestions?

If you have two (2) cats, then you need three (3) litterboxes. Always provide one more litterbox than you have cats. Also, it is advisable to have a litterbox on each level of the house. Since your cats are getting older, I would think that a trip to the vet would be in order. It may be a medical issue or a behavioral issue. Has anything in your home changed recently? If this behavior continues, a trip to the vet is necessary. Good luck.

Since your kitties are getting older, it could be arthritis which makes it difficult getting in and out of the box. I agree a vet visit is in order. If the vet feels your cat has arthritis, try a box with very low sides that is easy to get in and out of. M.J. had the same problem and a low litterbox helped.
